Three years ago this past March, I was dying in the hospital from alcoholism. I had been abusing alcohol for the past 18 years. I knew I needed to change. I also knew that if I didn’t change, I would be dead. I was consuming hundreds of empty calories daily, while eating as much junk food as I wanted. I started putting on weight quickly and steadily. My health was not only declining from the alcohol, but also from the weight I was gaining. I was caught in a vicious cycle and I could not see a way out. I couldn’t stand to look at the “Big Fat Guy” in the mirror, who was extremely depressed, hopeless, borderline diabetic with high blood pressure and red-faced and puffy. I developed sleep apnea and had to start sleeping with a mask. I was embarrassed of the man I had become and just wanted it all to end. I topped out at 360 pounds within the last year of drinking. I was consuming a 1.75 liter bottle of vodka a day. Then something amazing happened! I found a light and followed it out of the dark cavern I had been lost in. This part of my story is a story in itself. All I can say is that miracles do happen!
After I sobered-up, I finally found that I really did have freedom, love and support, but most importantly, hope. Even in my newly found life, I still struggled. I struggled with my weight and my health. After a year of being sober my weight hadn’t changed. I was still eating junk food and living a very unhealthy life, but decided that I needed to change. I was an athlete when I was younger. I played football, hockey, wrestling and golf – I knew what being active was. However, being this much overweight made me overwhelmed and I simply did not know where to start. I had tried so many diets that never worked and so I started to push for gastric bypass surgery. I honestly thought this was the only way.
I started the process to have gastric bypass surgery and was scheduled to have surgery in October 2015. I was on Facebook one morning when I came across a good friend’s post. It was his name but the picture he posted of himself was unbelievable. I really couldn’t believe my eyes. His eyes were the same and his smile, but he was so thin and looked in such good shape. I couldn’t stand it and I texted him that day. “You look awesome!” I texted. “Did you get bypass surgery?” I asked. He replied “No, I considered it but received a flyer in the mail from this place called Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping” He decided to give it a shot and the rest was an amazing body transformation for him, but he also became a huge beacon of hope for others…like me! You may have heard of him; his name is Kurtis Berg, the 2014 $10,000 winner! He encouraged me to give it a try. This decision was the second best decision I had ever made!
I signed up for my first 10-weeks in October 2015 instead of going ahead with the surgery. I knew I was at the best place to get my entire life back, not just a piece of it. I truly cannot thank the owners of Farrell’s New Hope, MN enough for helping me with my goal of becoming healthy again. They hold me accountable, they give me unbelievable support and they push me along with all my other FXB family. I have gained confidence and self-esteem again. I can run up a flight of stairs without becoming winded. I can now fit in booths at restaurants. I have unlimited amounts of energy and I now like who I see in the mirror. I am just completing my first year at FXB New Hope and I have lost 60 pounds, 7% body fat, 51.5 inches and shaved six minutes off my mile time.* I did my first sit ups for testing in September going from 0 when I started to 13! I increased my pushups from 8 when I began to 43! I am so grateful to have taken this opportunity to be a part of this program and committing myself to making such a positive life change with all those I call family at FXB New Hope!
