Staying FIT Through Pregnancy!





I started my 10-week session the week my second child turned two. I was stuck in a rut from never losing the weight from my second pregnancy and Farrell’s was the motivation I needed. My 10-week results weren’t what I was expecting. Going in, I was focused on the numbers – my weight, measurements, and body fat percentage.  By the end, none of that mattered. The real results were my confidence, energy level, and what my body could do. I went into my first day of testing wondering if I could even do a full sit up. By 10-week testing, I busted out over 50 in a minute! I now enjoyed working out. Exercise really had become a celebration of what my body could do rather than a punishment for how I looked or what I ate. It was exciting to make progress toward a full lifestyle change! 

Making a lifestyle change and carving out time for daily workouts with two young children, ages 4 and 2, is no small feat. It took support from the whole family. My husband was inspired by my results (really, he was just jealous of my energy level and confidence) and began his 10-weeks during the next session. Our family was all in – making good food choices together and finding active ways to spend time together. Rather than putting life on hold while we worked to get healthy, we were going to get healthy while living life!

My original goal for my 10-week session was to get to a place where I could have a healthy pregnancy. During both of my first two pregnancies, I developed gestational diabetes in the third trimester. This classified my pregnancies as high-risk and led to two cesarean deliveries. I still can’t fully articulate why I struggled with my c -sections, but I longed for more intimate births. After finding out we were expecting our third child during my 10-week session, I knew this life style change was going to have a big impact. Why not continue getting healthy while I was pregnant? I decided to continue FIT throughout my pregnancy!

The Farrell’s workouts and nutrition plan made all the difference during my third pregnancy! I made minor modifications to the workouts as my pregnancy progressed, and my energy level and flexibility were unreal. I continued the workouts until the very end of my pregnancy. My last workout at Farrell’s was four days before our baby was born (and I ended up being in labor for three of those days). I didn’t gain any weight until the third trimester. There were several noticeable differences with this pregnancy compared to the first two. First, my blood sugars remained controlled throughout my entire pregnancy and there was no need for insulin or other medications. With my first two pregnancies I swelled so much, I could barely fit into any of my shoes; with this pregnancy, I had virtually no swelling. Then there’s the pregnancy weight. With my first pregnancy I gained about 50 pounds and it took a full year for me to lose it. With my second pregnancy I gained over 50 pounds and I never lost it (that’s where my 10-weeks came in). With my third pregnancy I gained exactly 20 pounds (all of it during the third trimester) and I lost all of it in 16 days – that’s while I was still recovering, with absolutely no exercise - 16 days!* Our first two children were estimated to be over 10 pounds and ended up weighing over 9 pounds. Our third baby was our smallest at 8 and a half pounds. Now let’s talk about clothes. The first time I braved pre-pregnancy jeans after my first child was the day she turned 3 months old, and I still couldn’t button them. After our second child, I needed a new wardrobe – there was no way I was fitting into any pre-pregnancy jeans.  After this baby, I wore pre-pregnancy jeans fully buttoned and zipped the day he was three weeks old. I probably could have done it sooner, but given my past, I wasn’t about to attempt it any earlier. 

Farrell’s empowered me to have a healthy pregnancy and prepared me for a long labor – 72 hours to be exact. I joked with my husband during labor that I didn’t hold squats and wall-sits at Farrell’s for nothing. The workouts prepared me physically and mentally to birth our baby. After enduring the most grueling physical task of my life, I was shocked that I didn’t have a single sore muscle in my body. For the first time, I finally experienced the intimacy I longed for in birth and got to hold our son in all of his messy wonder. Motherhood is a journey – I’m choosing to make it a FIT one.
