From CPAP Machine to the Best Shape of My Life!

Doug BeforeI have been out of shape the majority of my adult life. I started to see my health slowly decline. I was put on a CPAP machine that required me to wear a mask to sleep soundly throughout the night. When talking to my doctor about going through the sleep study to see if I needed a CPAP machine, he had mentioned if I just lost 30 lbs. or so, I likely would not need to use it. I’ve been through the dieting in my past with some success, but no matter what, the weight would always come back and then some. When I reached 40 years old, I knew if I didn’t make a change now, I likely never would.

My journey at Farrell’s actually started as the result of a dinner with a friend I had not seen in quite some time. We had made contact over the phone and one night decided to meet for dinner. I was amazed at the transformation she had made since I last saw her. I had to ask the question, “What in the world have you been doing?” Her response was three letters, “FXB”. Obviously, I was intrigued and had to ask more questions to learn more about it. A few months down the road I still had not joined and I found myself asking her questions about it again. I was starting to not feel as rested as when I first started using my CPAP machine and was being faced with having to go through yet another sleep study.  I remembered those words about losing weight that my doctor had suggested. I saw my friend had managed to sustain her transformation, so I finally decided to join the next 10-week session at Farrell’s Columbus. I would have been happy to just lose the weight I needed to, and keep it off so I would not need to wear a mask to sleep each night. I certainly did not expect the changes that I experienced, not only in my first 10 weeks, but throughout the 18 months that I have been a member.

Doug todayI was extremely nervous walking into initial testing. There were a lot of people there, none of whom I knew. I got all my measurements taken and from the moment they said, “Go” for the push-ups and sit-ups, my nerves were actually being calmed. Now, recall I said I knew no one there, I know for a fact I heard people cheering for me…by name. This was not in my head. Yes, I had a name tag on, but to hear my name being called out by people I had never met before gave me a small glimpse into the community, or shall I say, family, that is FXB. Even on the mile run, which I had to mostly walk due to painful shin splints, there were people cheering me on. Fast forward to the end of my 10 weeks, the results I experienced simply exceeded my expectations. My goal of not needing my CPAP machine to sleep soundly was achieved. The changes in my body, energy level, and confidence only had me wanting continue this journey.

I put a lot of effort into the next year and made the decision early on I was going to complete testing again at the end of my one-year as a FIT member. At my one-year testing, for the first time in my life, I ran a full mile. When I started my 10 weeks, my mile time was over 16 minutes. At the end of my first year as a FIT member, my mile time was 8 minutes 28 seconds. So, here I am, over 40 and setting new personal records. Something I never would have dreamed of when I started with Farrell’s. Over the course of my 62 weeks, I was able to lose 95 lbs. and 13% body fat.* I am clearly in the best shape of my life and feel great about it.

So, you might be asking, “What keeps you going back?” There is more than one answer to that question.  The changes in my body and mind, which I mentioned earlier, are obviously on the list. Another reason is the real sense of family that you will see immediately when you start at Farrell’s. I look forward to getting to class each night and talking to my fellow members both before and after a workout. Of course, it is always fun to run into someone I have not seen in awhile and they ask me what I’ve been doing. I start by saying I have been kickboxing.  Of course, then they ask where. Now it is my turn to say those three letters “FXB”. I remember one person asked me if it was hard. There is no doubt it is hard, but nothing worth doing is ever easy.

One of the most important things about getting into a regular workout routine is finding something you love to do. With Farrell’s, I have found that. I love pushing myself to my limit. Once I start to feel I have nothing left, it always seems there is another member on the mat that is encouraging me to keep going.  My only regret is that I did not join earlier.
