My Farrell’s journey started on a whim. I was playing in a charity golf event and there was a silent auction basket with a 50% off coupon to Farrell’s in Stillwater along with a Farrell's sweatshirt. At the end of the auction, no one had bid on the item so I placed the minimum bid and walked away with the prize. What had I gotten myself into? I knew nothing about Farrell’s so I checked out the website and read about the program and some of the member stories. It sounded like a great program, but I was afraid it would be too intense for me. I made an appointment with the manager, Leslie Egan. Leslie did an excellent job of explaining the program and I took the plunge and signed up for the next 10-week session starting in October 2016.
I had been on the heavy side for much of my life, but it was getting out of hand. My goal for joining was mostly to lose a few pounds and get in better shape. On the orientation day I was very nervous, but also excited. I was mostly nervous about the one mile timed run as I hadn’t run a mile in at least 20 years. Although I had to walk much of the mile, I got through it thanks to one of the Farrell’s FIT members that walked/ran the last ¼ mile with me. Having this support was my first introduction to what has become a big part of my Farrell’s journey. The comradery and support that comes from working out as a group is remarkable. The owners, instructors, coaches, FIT members and fellow 10-weekers support and encourage you throughout.
I am not going to lie and say the first week of classes was easy. It was intense and hard, but also fun and exhilarating. Getting up early to make my 6:00am class was an adjustment, but I felt so good and energized that it quickly became easier. The program is well put together with a combination of kickboxing, strength training and nutritional counseling. It just works! It never really gets easy as you continually push harder. Once you start seeing results it really motivates you.
Although they tell you to stay off the scale I couldn’t help but check my progress. I started seeing results almost immediately. I was losing weight, my clothes fit better and I could tell I was getting stronger and building endurance. My initial goal for the program was to lose 15 lbs. At the 5-week checkpoint I had already lost 13 lbs.* I was getting so many positive remarks from family, friends and my Farrell’s instructors and friends. Knee and lower back pain I had been battling for years was much diminished. By the end of my 10 weeks I had lost 25 pounds and 14 inches with 4 of those inches from my waist.* Time to buy some new pants! I also increased the number of push-ups and sit-ups I could do in one minute by 170%. I felt fantastic both physically and mentally.
Although I didn’t win the $1,000 10-week challenge, I finished runner up and was thrilled. In my mind, I was a winner because I had far exceeded my weight loss goals and was so much more fit and stronger. I had finally found a workout program that worked and that I enjoyed.
My journey didn’t end at the end of the 10-week challenge and it continues today. I signed up to become a FIT member and now I am down 33 pounds and continue to lose weight and gain strength.*
Oh . . . that Farrell’s sweatshirt I received in the silent auction basket almost got thrown away because it was much too small for me. It now fits great and is one of my favorites.
