Feeling a Decade Younger at Farrell’s!



Turning 50 was rough! My weight crept up and up, out of control. At the apex, four years ago, after not exercising for more than two decades, I thought I’d better do something about it. I don’t like to swim, I hate the elliptical, and am too uncoordinated and awkward for yoga. After trying CrossFit I realized that was not for me when I couldn’t move my shoulder for weeks afterward. So I did what I had been doing, which was … nothing.



Klutho violin January 2017Then last year I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and told I was borderline for metabolic syndrome. I was put on medicine and advised to walk 30 minutes a day. Walking I could do, I thought, and so my daily walks began. Daily walks became semi-weekly when the weather turned cold, but I kept walking, and one day noticed a new sign on my route that said “eXtreme Bodyshaping.” I guessed that gym must be for a bunch of hardcore body builders and I didn’t give it another thought. With daily walking, my weight stopped going up, but it wasn’t going down. As spring turned to summer, I started seeing Facebook posts about Farrell’s eXtreme Bodyshaping. Hmm, I thought, that’s that bodybuilding place I see on my walking route. I was curious, so started to follow Farrell’s on Facebook. I was impressed with the pretty amazing results and muscle definition in people who had started out looking a lot like, well, me. Hmm. Those people look like they are having fun even though they are working out, I thought, and they look strong and fit. I decided to sign-up for a 10-week session. I figured if I didn’t like it, 10 weeks wasn’t that long. Orientation day came, and I wondered what I had gotten myself into. A sit-up? Really? Before class even starts? And then nutrition orientation – hey wait, I don’t remember reading about that, I’m not sure I can do THAT for 10 weeks.

The 10 weeks were awesome. Kickboxing – so cool! I even managed to impress my sons with my boxing gloves. Cardio kickboxing uses just about every muscle, and Pete keeps us energized every minute on kickboxing days. It reminds me of tricking a child into eating something healthy by serving it in a fun way – we don’t notice how hard we’re being pushed because it is so much fun. Upper and lower body strength training days rotate, but even the resistance bands aren’t awful – even when we do timed density workouts, and even when a classmate tosses me a harder band to use when she thinks I’m going too easy. Sit-ups, push-ups – things I had not done in more than two decades – I cannot only do, but am excited to do. By following the Farrell’s nutrition plan and fitness kickboxing and strength training for the 10 weeks, I was excited that on 10-week testing day I had lost more than 8 pounds, lost 11 inches, was able to do 38 sit-ups, and nailed my push-ups by doing 57 (!) in one minute. *

 
Amy in Sept. 2017 as a Farrell's FIT MemberI look forward to Monday mornings, the start of each new week, a chance to rebuild muscle and strength I thought I had left back on the other side of that 50 hump. Six days a week, I look forward to the camaraderie and the accountability. My shoulders and various other arthritic body parts actually feel better after working out. I have new strength and energy. I am worn out right after class – that’s what Life at Level 10® is all about – but it is a good exhaustion, and I feel a decade younger when I’m done than I did when I walked in forty-five minutes earlier. There has not been a single day that I would have preferred skipping class instead of working out at Farrell’s Bettendorf.

 
I am proud of my progress and even more excited about my doctor’s reaction at an appointment not long after I completed the 10-Week Challenge. My weight is down, metabolic syndrome is no longer on the horizon, and I am almost off blood pressure medicine.

 
Now instead of dreading my next birthday, I look forward to doing all 55 of my birthday push-ups. Turns out that the gym I thought was for serious bodybuilders only is in reality a place to gain strength and confidence, with the bonus of re-shaping not only muscles, but also my future.
